Barbora Kardos is a highly skilled and educated skin aesthetician that has been passionate about improving skin health for over 20 years. She began her studies in anatomy, physiology and massage in Dublin, Ireland and from there continued her education in Slovakia where she studied biology, chemistry and dermatology and completed her European Esthetics Certificate. Q & A with Barbora

  1. How long have you been in aesthetics?
I began my career in aesthetics in 1995 and have worked as a professional aesthetician ever since.
  2. What type of license/training do you have you have?
In my home country of Slovakia, an Aesthetics Diploma requires 4 years of intensive training that includes biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, dermatology, and psychology, as well as years of hands-on training. I’m proud to have graduated “with distinction” and to bring my skills to Canada. Unfortunately, the title of Aesthetician is not as meaningful here, where just about anyone can call themselves an aesthetician and provide skin services. I am also a Registered Holistic Nutritionist.
  3. Why did you get into this field?
I have always been fascinated by herbal and pharmacological medicine, as well as biology and physiology, but really wanted to combine the science with my love of people. I enjoy solving complicated skin issues, and giving honest, accurate advice that gets results.
  4. Does it bother you that so many untrained people offer these services?
Yes, it does. Untrained providers of aesthetics services tend to operate with a “one-size-fits-all” mentality and don’t have the training or knowledge to think critically and provide individual solutions. It is also dangerous to provide services such as microneedling or laser treatments without the ability to recognize early stages of skin disease, such as melanoma.
  5. What is your favourite procedure?
I love any facial treatments that address the concerns of my clients and achieve both immediate and long-term results. My passions change and evolve, but most recently I am enjoying laser removal of vascular lesions, because the results are so dramatic. It’s very satisfying to see unsightly nose veins or leg veins disappear – and sometimes in just one treatment!
  6. What procedure do you dislike the most?
I am not passionate about “spa” services like body wraps and massages or facial treatments that have great marketing but don’t really achieve much. I prefer medical-based treatments that get results.
  7. What do you think are the biggest factors when selecting the best treatment for your client?
My client’s concerns, what they see and are bothered by, or what they wish to prevent. I also need to understand lifestyle, willingness to commit, and home skincare routine. Once I understand these factors, I can align my client with the most appropriate facial treatment, package or membership.
