IPL Laser Hair Removal

Free Yourself from Future Fuss!

If you currently waste time waxing or shaving, only to be frustrated with ongoing bumps and stubble, then IPL laser hair removal is for you! Clients come to Halcyon Cosmetic Clinic from Port Moody, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam for this highly effective hair removal treatment.

IPL light heats and destroys the hair follicle, resulting in long lasting and often permanent hair removal. No more razor burn, bumps or stubble. This is an ideal treatment for:

  • Upper Lip & Chin
  • Underarms
  • Bikini Line & Brazilian
  • Upper & Lower Legs

For maximum effectiveness, treatments are done 6-12 weeks apart, depending on the location and growth cycle of the hair.

The Pro of IPL vs Laser

IPL uses various filters to adjust the depth of light penetration, so it can be customized for hair depth on different areas of the body and can be adjusted to be more effective once hair becomes finer.

The Cons of IPL vs Laser

IPL cannot differentiate between pigment in the skin and in the hair, so even a slight tan or self-tanner can result in a burn. It is also not appropriate for darker skin types.

    IPL Hair Removal FAQ

    What is IPL hair removal?

Both IPL and laser hair removal use light energy to heat the pigment within the hair and hair follicle. This destroys the cells required for hair growth which results in finer, lighter hair and the ceasing of hair growth entirely.

How does IPL hair removal differ from laser hair removal?

Both are very effective means of long-lasting hair removal. A laser by definition only has one wavelength of light, whereas IPL has multiple. This means that an IPL can use filters to single out particular wavelengths to more effectively target different hair depths and types.

What type of equipment do you use?

We use the Health Canada approved and medical-grade Lumenis M22, a favourite of North American dermatologists.

What training do your IPL hair removal technicians have?

This is a GREAT question we wish everyone would ask! At minimum our technicians are licensed aestheticians, if not medical professionals. In addition, all have both cosmetic/medical laser and IPL certification and a minimum of 15 years of experience.

How do I know if IPL hair removal is right for me?

If you find yourself wasting time with hair removal or suffering from razor burn, ingrown hairs or hyperpigmentation from constant shaving, then IPL is right for you!

    Is IPL hair removal permanent?

While IPL can have permanent results, as we age and our hormones change it is possible for hair follicles to regenerate and for some hair growth to return, though it is generally much lighter and sparser.

    Does it hurt?

The sensation of IPL hair removal is similar to an elastic band snap and is more tolerable in some areas than in others. The cooling tip on our IPL reduces discomfort and in some cases topical numbing can be applied. The experience of your technician is also something that greatly affects the comfort of your procedure!

    Are there any contraindications?

    • The biggest contraindication is a tan. As energy is absorbed by pigment during IPL hair removal it is very important that your skin has no active pigmentation from tanning or from self-tanner.
    • You cannot wax, thread or tweeze for 6 weeks prior to your appointment or there might not be any hair in the follicle to treat!
    • IPL hair removal is limited to lighter skin tones simply because it treats very close to the epidermis where skin pigment resides. If you have darker skin an Nd:YAG laser treats deeper and is more appropriate for you.

Do I have to shave before a treatment?

YES! Arriving as cleanly shaven as possible will result in less pain and a more effective treatment. We want hair underneath the skin to absorb energy to damage to the hair follicle. If hair above the skin absorbs energy, it will sizzle and fall off, but will not permanently affect hair growth.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Ensure the area to be treated is clean and freshly shaved. If you tend to get any type of skin irritation from shaving, please do so at least 24 hours before your appointment.

What will happen during my treatment?

Your technician will explain your procedure and, if needed, have you change into a gown to expose the area to be treated. A cool ultrasound gel will be applied to the treatment area.

What are the side effects after a treatment?

It is not uncommon to feal increasing heat in the area treated during the hours following treatment. Individual hair follicles may also be red and swollen, though this usually dissipates within 48 hours.

Will I see results right away?

Yes… or no. Sometimes hair growth is immediately stunted, and regrowth isn’t seen for weeks. Other times the hair appears to continue growing but the follicle is damaged, so it reaches a point where the hairs detach and fall out.

How often do I need to do treatments?

Treatments should be 6-12 weeks apart depending on the area treated.

How many treatments will I need?

In general, it takes 3-5 treatments to see significant change, but more thorough hair reduction may take more. The more consistent you are with treatments, the better the long term results.

    Do you sell packages?

Yes! Almost all of our services at Halcyon Cosmetic Clinic are available in pre-paid packages of 3 to save 10%, and packages of 5 to save 15%.

Do you ever refuse to do IPL hair removal?

Yes. We reserve the right to refuse treatment on anyone. For any reason. Especially if we have any reason at all to suspect you are tanned.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, major credit cards and e-transfer. GST will be added to all prices.
