Leg veins are a cosmetic concern for many. Fortunately, advancements in medical technology have led to effective leg vein removal treatments using both Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Nd:YAG laser, both available at Halcyon Cosmetic & Skin Clinic. Clients come to us from Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and many parts of Greater Vancouver for these quick, effective treatments.
These non-invasive light-based procedures eliminate visible leg veins, resulting in smooth, clear legs without resorting to incisions or injections. IPL treatments have the added benefit of improving overall skin tone and texture as well.
Leg vein treatments are relatively fast, often between 15 to 30 minutes, and downtime is minimal with most clients resuming normal activities immediately.

Both IPL and Nd:YAG laser target hemoglobin within the leg veins. As the blood absorbs light energy, the heat is transferred to the blood vessel wall. This affects the integrity of the blood vessel and as the body recognizes it has been damaged, it breaks it down and slowly clears it away.
Results are generally long-lasting, although if underlying vascular issues are present, this may result in regeneration of the blood vessels over time.
Cosmetic leg veins, often referred to as spider veins or thread veins, are small, visible blood vessels near the surface of the skin. They are usually red, blue, or purple in colour.
Laser and IPL treatments delivering focused light energy into the targeted blood vessels. This energy heats and damages the vein, causing it to collapse and gradually fade away.
Most clients describe this treatment as a snapping sensation as the laser is pulsed, but it is usually well-tolerated.
A single treatment session typically takes 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the size and number of veins being treated.
The number of sessions required varies from person to person. Some may achieve satisfactory results after one session, while others may require multiple sessions spaced a few weeks apart.
There is usually little to no downtime after laser or IPL treatment for leg veins. You can return to your normal activities immediately, although it’s recommended to avoid strenuous exercise and sun exposure for a short period.
Side effects may include redness, swelling, bruising, or temporary darkening of the treated veins. Serious complications are rare but can include blistering, scarring, or changes in skin pigmentation.
Results are often long-lasting, but new veins may develop over time, so maintenance sessions may be needed.
Laser and IPL treatments are generally safe for various skin types but may be less effective for very dark skin. Your provider will assess your skin type and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
You should avoid sun exposure for several weeks prior to treatment, and avoid medications such as NSAIDS, aspirin and blood thinners, that may increase the chance of bruising. It is also advised to avoid alcoholic beverages the evening prior to treatment for this same reason.
