    Permanent Eyeliner FAQ

    What is permanent eyeliner?

Permanent eyeliner is the application of permanent makeup pigment or tattoo pigment along your lashline to give the appearance of applied eyeliner, without the struggle of daily application. It typically lasts 2-5 years or more, depending on your skin type and the colour and technique chosen.

What is lashline enhancement or tightliner?

A lashline enhancement or “tightliner” is the application of permanent makeup pigment just at the base of, and in between, your eyelashes to give the appearance of larger, defined eyes and longer, thicker lashes. It is applied using both a hand-tool or a tattoo machine, depending on your artist and skin type. A lashline enhancement is great for anyone who doesn’t wear eye makeup or would like the option of not having to apply eye makeup. A lashline enhancement is also great for those who wear makeup but would like a little more eye definition when they aren’t. It typically lasts 2-5 years or more, depending on your skin type and the pigment chosen.

How do I know which eyeliner technique is right for me?

You don’t, we do! Only after discussing your desired look and analyzing your skin type can we determine the permanent eyeliner technique that is right for you.

Are there different types and styles of permanent eyeliner?

Yes. There are a variety of colours and styles of permanent eyeliner. Eyeliner can be applied as a defined line or as a smudged, or softened, line. Colours can be combined for a variety of looks. We keep wing tips to a minimum and will only do them on appropriate candidates as success depends on skin type and eye shape. In many cases we choose to be conservative… a happy wing today is a sad wing tomorrow!

What type of tools do you use?

This is a question all clients should ask when researching eyeliner tattoos. We use professional quality tools and equipment that undergo strict quality control during manufacturing, are stamped with a lot# and date, and labelled with the method of sterilization. There are many different shapes and sizes of permanent eyeliner application tools available and often several different ones need to be used to achieve your desired look.

Are lashline enhancement and eyeliner semi-permanent or permanent?

Because eyeliner and lashline pigment (of any type) is implanted into the upper dermis, it is a tattoo and is correctly referred to as permanent. However, permanent eyeliner and lashline pigment is formulated to fade naturally over time, which is why some technicians will refer to it as semi-permanent. It is also a common error for the inexperienced artist to implant pigment too shallowly into the epidermis, where it will shed with natural cell turnover – which is another reason why it is sometimes incorrectly referred to as semi-permanent. The correct terminology is permanent eyeliner and lashline.

    Does it hurt?

Over the years, we’ve tested various numbing agents and techniques to increase comfort and have developed a process that is nearly 100% effective and also works very quickly. Most of our clients have no problem tolerating lashline and eyeliner treatments. Some clients are so relaxed they drift off to sleep during a treatment!

How long does permanent eyeliner or lashline enhancement take to heal?

You will likely experience some degree of swelling on the day of your treatment as well as the morning after. You will have more swelling with permanent eyeliner than with a lashline enhancement but this varies from person to person. Once healing begins you might see some flaking and experience a little itching. Be patient, flaking should be complete after a few days but full healing of the skin takes 4-6 weeks and sometimes longer.

Can I cover an existing permanent eyeliner tattoo?

It depends. If your previous eyeliner tattoo is not too saturated, the reapplication of pigment can often freshen it up. But if you have any scarring, unnatural colour or migration of pigment, removal may be required. Please email or text us a photo or come in for a consultation if you have existing eyeliner tattoos.

How do I know if permanent eyeliner or lashline enhancement is right for me?

If you apply eyeliner daily, then permanent eyeliner is a fantastic time saving option that allows you to wake up ready to go, as well as to swim or participate in sports without your makeup smudging, smearing or disappearing. If you are an eyeshadow lover, and like to wear dark or bright colours, this might not be a great choice as your shadow will cover the permanent eyeliner. If you prefer to wake up looking well-rested with soft definition, or are not a regular makeup wearer, then a lashline enhancement is a fantastic option.

    Are there contraindications?

Yes. We will not apply permanent eyeliner if you…

    • are under the age of 18
    • are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • are currently using any lash growth products
    • are wearing lash extensions
    • are on oral acne medication or have been in the last 6 months
    • have keloid or hypertrophic scarring
    • have vitiligo
    • have uncontrolled diabetes

How should I prepare for my appointment?

    • No alcohol 24 hours prior to your treatment
    • Contact us if you take blood thinners on a regular basis
    • No exfoliating skin care products on the area the week before your treatment
    • If you have recently completed radiation treatment, we require a note from your radiation oncologist confirming that your skin is healthy enough to undergo paramedical tattooing
    • Pain tolerance is reduced just before, and during, menstruation. Keep this in mind when timing the booking of your appointment.
    • If your paramedical procedure is anywhere on your face and you tend to get cold sores, please ensure you have a prescription antiviral on hand.

Do you ever refuse to do permanent eyeliner or related treatments?

Yes, we reserve the right to refuse any permanent makeup treatment for any reason.

What payment methods do you accept?

We  accept cash, major credit cards and e-transfer. GST will be added to all prices.
